ORIGIN OF THE COMPANY NAME

Originally constructed in 1608, the Jamestown Glasshouse preceded the arrival of the first glassblowers to the city, the Germans and the Poles. Near where the current exhibit is located small furnaces were built. A small team of glassblowers and laborers both chopped down hardwood trees for fuel (which could take up to two weeks at 2,300 degrees) and collected the ingredients, including ash, sand, crushed oyster shells, and burned seaweed. It is believed that because so much time was required for prep work, actual glassblowing probably only occurred for about five or six days a month.

While successful in sending samples of their glassware to England, their operation did not likely survive the Starving Time, in which the colony's population dwindled from 500 to 60. Between 1621 and 1622, there were four glassblowers from Italy and two assistants to help make attempts. It wasn't successful due to various reasons such as the bad weather, the Indian massacre of 1622, sickness, and emigration. Historians believe that the furnace stopped working in 1624.
